Seborrheic dermatitis is a very common, treatable skin condition that causes scaly patches and red skin, mainly on the scalp. It feels and looks like dandruff on steroids and having seborrheic dermatitis itchy scalp can be the worst at times!

For me, my seborrheic dermatitis itchy scalp comes and goes in waves – sometimes it’s great, and other times, it’s bothersome.

Some of the causes for when it’s worse is if I am very stressed and going through hormonal and weight fluctuations.  I find when I remember my self-care routines, eat a more whole-food diet, and keep to my hair routine, it becomes a lot more manageable

My shampoo rotation routine keeps my seborrheic dermatitis itchy scalp at bay…

  1. Doctor prescribed ketoconazole-containing shampoo (optional but helps)
  2. Neutrogena T/Sal Shampoo
  3. dpHue Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse
  4. Regular shampoo – whatever you choose. I love Pureology
  5. Rose water spray – spray this on your roots/scalp after you get out of the shower and still have wet/damp hair

I wash my hair every other day or every two days but don’t go longer than that as bacteria and yeast can build up. Each time I wash my hair, I rotate with one of the products listed above. After the shampoo treatment, follow with whatever conditioner you prefer.

I was recently in Europe and bought some medicated shampoo at their local pharmacy and loved mixing it into my routine as well. If you live or travel overseas, I recommend going to a pharmacy and giving it a try – they have a variety of great products with cleaner ingredients than the U.S.!

Some tips and tricks I have learned along the way:

  • AS TEMPTING AS IT IS, DO NOT PICK AT IT. It can cause even more irritation, bleeding, and possibly an infection on your scalp.
  • Yeast and bacteria FEAST and survive in damp environments so do not go to bed with your hair wet.
  • Deeply massage the hair shampoo/product into your hair and keep it there for at least 3 minutes or whatever the recommended time is on the bottle.

I hope this helps you as it has me, in fighting my seborrheic dermatitis itchy scalp.

If you suffer from greasy, dull hair, I suggest you read my post about double rinsing!

Additionally, I want to try a scalp spa. I will provide a review when I visit one – Does anyone have good recommendations in NYC?
