Throughout my childhood, I never really suffered from acne. It was only when I turned 25 then all of a sudden, BOOM – acne everywhere. I tried everything under the sun and eventually got so insecure and desperate that I decided to take Accutane. In short – I do not recommend it. Not judging, it just wasn’t a positive experience for me.

For those of you that don’t know – Accutane is an extremely high dose of Vitamin A. It is often used as a last resort acne “cure” and you have to get monthly blood work to check how your body is handling the medicine plus a whole boatload of other things. And guess what? I still have acne.

Growing up, I was a sailor and sun worshiper. Technically, I still am to this day BUT I do not directly tan my face.

Why? Because I have been suffering from hyperpigmentation and melasma on my face for YEARS after Accutane.

How did it happen? Accutane made my skin very thin (even after stopping the medication and was approved to be in the sun) and when I took a trip to Aruba and laid in the sun – boy oh boy did I have patches of discoloration all over my face.

Let’s take one step back:

“Hyperpigmentation is a broad term that refers to a skin condition in which the skin is discolored or darkened due to an array of factors, including sun damage, acne scarring, and inflammation lingering from an eczema flare-up. One type of hyperpigmentation that concerns myriad folks (and is likely why you’re here) is melasma, a form of the condition that’s more common in women and is usually most prevalent on the face in areas like the forehead, chin, and above the lip.” – KALEIGH FASANELLA, Allure

Since hyperpigmentation and melasma are from the same family in that melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation, the good news is that treatment of either is likely to be the same as well.

Since then, I have tried all sorts of treatments to get my skin back to an even tone. Some treatments included: Microneedling, Lasers, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Facials plus many different serums, etc. They have helped but never fully got rid of my hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Musely Spot Cream

One day in the office, my coworker told me about a product called Musely – The Spot Cream that she considered the HOLY GRAIL for similar issues she was facing. I figured why not try it? What do I have to lose?

I took an online quiz with an online doctor on the Musely website (all super easy steps). Within a couple of days, I was sent the product and immediately replaced my current AM and PM serums with the Musely – The Spot Cream.

Check out my before and after photos of using this product for JUST 1 month:

Now that I am in maintenance mode, I use the Musely – The Spot Cream only as my AM serum and target it on the areas where I had really bad hyperpigmentation and melasma. Most importantly, I feel more confident and comfortable going without foundation. Also, knowing that I have a product that works, I have been enjoying the sun without constantly wearing hats and such! Pairing this product with a great sunscreen is also amazing.
